NPS vs PPF for retirement: what to compare

By Dhanwise · Educational content, not independently reviewed financial advice

NPS and PPF are not interchangeable inputs to a retirement plan. Compare their role, investment uncertainty and access rules before comparing projected balances. Neither a higher assumed return nor a headline tax benefit is enough to choose a product.

NPS: a market-linked retirement scheme

NPS Trust describes NPS as a market-linked, defined-contribution scheme. Returns depend on investments; the rate in Dhanwise is an assumption, not an NPS quote. Check the applicable account type and exit conditions before counting the balance as accessible cash.

PPF: check the savings scheme, not just a projection

India Post lists PPF among its small-savings schemes and describes annual compounding. A constant-return projection does not reproduce contribution limits, deposit timing, notified interest rates or withdrawal conditions. Verify the current scheme documents before acting.

Questions to ask before comparing

  • When will you need the money, and can the account release it then?
  • Which returns are assumptions, and what changes if returns are lower?
  • What are the applicable contribution, withdrawal and tax rules for your circumstances?
  • Do you have accessible savings for emergencies and early retirement?

Dhanwise does not recommend either product, rank them by after-tax returns or provide scheme-compliant NPS/PPF calculators. Its full planner records their balances but notionally pools them.

Read the pooled-model limitations and estimate your overall retirement need.
